The Swiss world number one took a while to warm up as clouds gathered over Arthur AsheStadium but once he had the first set in the bag, Federer wasted little time putting Robredo into the shade and secured his ninth straight win over the Spaniard.

Federer, winner of a record 15 Grand Slam titles, sealed victory with his ninth ace in one hour 48 minutes.

Federer next plays Sweden's Robin Soderling, whom the Swiss beat en route to the French Open and Wimbledon titles this year.

Roland Garros runner-up Soderling became the first man to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open when his eighth-seeded opponentNikolay Davydenko retired with a leg injury.

Russian Davydenko hobbled around court with his left leg heavily strapped but after losing the third set, he shook his head and informed the umpire he could not continue. The retirement would also have been a relief for Soderling, who had suffered a dizzy spell during the 7-5 3-6 6-2 win.

Fourth seed Novak Djokovic moved up a gear as he beat Czech 15th seed Radek Stepanek 6-1 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

The Serb, runner-up at Flushing Meadows in 2007, was never tested as he raced to victory in one hour, 46 minutes to set up a clash with 10th seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain.

Stepanek was woeful in the first set and Djokovic took it in just 23 minutes before easing through the second.

The Czech put up more of a fight in the third set but a brilliant lob gave Djokovic the break in the sixth game and he marched into the last eight for the third straight year.

Djokovic will next face Fernando Verdasco, who killed off American hopes in the men's singles, beating John Isner 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 to make it the worst home showing in the professional era.

The towering Isner, who knocked out American number one Andy Roddick in a five-set epic on Saturday, started well against 10th seed Verdasco but was eventually overpowered from the baseline by the classy Spaniard.

Isner banged down 13 aces to no avail against Verdasco who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year.

Verdasco will face either fourth seed Novak Djokovic or 15th seed Radek Stepanek in the last eight.

Onions replaces Flintoff in Champions Trophy

LONDON: Fast bowler Graham Onions has replaced injured Andrew Flintoff in the England squad for the ICC Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa from September 22 to October 5.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said the ICC has conveyed to it that the Champions Trophy event technical committee has approved 26-year-old Onions as Flintoff's replacement.

Flintoff, who retired from Test cricket after England's recent Ashes success, was initially named in England's 15-member Champions Trophy squad but was later ruled out due to a knee injury.

Subsequently, Onions, who is yet to make his one-day international debut, has also been called up to join the England team for their ongoing ODI series against Australia.

England regain Ashes with fifth Test win

LONDON: England regained the Ashes with a 197-run win over Australia in the fifth and final Test at the Oval here on Sunday.

Victory, achieved with more than a day to spare, saw England take the five-match series

Australia, set what would have been a record fourth innings victory total of 546, were bowled out for 348 with Michael Hussey last man out for 121, when he was caught close in by Alastair Cook off spinner Graeme Swann.

"It's a special moment. It hasn't sunk in yet. We had to dig in and fight," said England skipper Andrew Strauss.

"When we were bad in the series, we were very bad but when we were good we were very good."

Australia captain Ricky Ponting said: "We gave it all we could, but it wasn't enough. Full credit to England, they won the crucial moments and deserved to win the series.

"I think this series has shown that Test cricket is alive and well around the world."

From 327 for five, the end came swiftly with four wickets going down for 16 runs in 32 balls, with fast bowler Stephen Harmison taking three for seven in 13 himself.

It was a remarkable turnaround for England, who'd lost the fourth Test by an innings and 80 runs at Headingley, and had only clung on for a draw in the series opener at Cardiff by a single wicket.

Australia had been making steady progress at 217 for two before Ponting was run out by Andrew Flintoff's direct hit in the all-rounder's last match before his Test retirement.

Five balls later Michael Clarke was also run out, for nought, before England's progress was checked by a sixth-wicket stand of 91 between Hussey and Brad Haddin.

But just when England fans were starting to fret again, Haddin, on 34, went down the pitch to Swann, who took four for 120 in 40.2 overs, and hoisted a mistimed drive to Strauss at mid-wicket.

And 327 for six became 327 for seven when Australia lost another two wickets in quick succession.

Mitchell Johnson went for a seven-ball nought, brilliantly caught by diving second slip Paul Collingwood off his Durham team-mate Harmison.

Peter Siddle then got a leading edge off Harmison and Flintoff held a simple catch at mid-off.

Harmison made it two wickets in two balls when Stuart Clark was snapped up at short leg by Cook.

Ben Hilfenhaus survived the hat-trick but the end was nigh.

England had taken the new ball after tea with Australia 278 for five.

But Hussey's two off Stuart Broad saw him to a first Test century in 29 innings off 219 balls with 11 boundaries.

Flintoff and Strauss had stunned Australia with two run-outs, the first they'd suffered this series, before tea to dismiss Ponting and Clarke.

Ponting and Hussey had frustrated England with a third-wicket stand of 127 that raised hopes of an improbable victory.

But Flintoff struck in unlikely fashion.

Hussey called Ponting for a single off Harmison but Flintoff, running round from mid-on, threw down the stumps at the striker's end and Ponting was short of his ground by a foot.

Ponting, in what could be his final Ashes Test in England, had to go for 66, having stroked 10 stylish fours in his 103-ball stay after he and left-hander Hussey had revived Australia from the depths of 90 for two.

Vice-captain Clarke fell in even more extraordinary fashion.

Australia's leading batsman this series, clipped a ball from Swann that deflected off the boot of Alastair Cook at short leg to leg-slip Strauss, who hit the stumps with a sharp under-arm throw.

This was a much tighter call for third umpire Peter Hartley but he eventually ruled the bail was in the air with Clarke's bat still to be grounded.

Clarke was out for nought and Australia, who'd lost two wickets for three runs in six balls, were now 220 for four.

And they could have been five down had not Collingwood dropped Hussey, on 55, off Swann.

But Australia were 236 for five when Marcus North, trying to sweep Swann, was smartly stumped by wicket-keeper Matt Prior.

Australia resumed Sunday on 80 without loss.

Left-hander Simon Katich had only added one to his overnight 42 when, padding up, he was plumb lbw to Swann.

Three balls later, fellow opener Shane Watson (40) was lbw to man-of-the-match Stuart Broad.

England consolidated Saturday the advantage gained from dismissing Australia for just 160, with Broad taking five for 37, in a second innings 373 for nine declared that featured a debut century from Jonathan Trott, who made 119.

Strauss's declaration left the visitors needing to break the record for a successful Test fourth innings run-chase, of 418 for seven set by West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2002/03, to win this match.

England victory's left Ponting with the unwanted record of becoming only the second Australia captain, since Billy Murdoch in 1890, to be in charge of two losing Ashes tours of England.

And it also knocked Australia off top spot in the Test rankings

ICC

Isn’t all is well that ends well?
Pakistan has reached an out-of-court settlement with the International Cricket Council (ICC) over the country being stripped of co-hosting rights for the 2011 cricket World Cup, local media reported on Friday.

Pakistani media reported that Ijaz Butt, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, received authorization from the PCB governing board on Thursday to reach a cash-settlement with the ICC.

The amount of the final settlement was not disclosed, reported The News. Pakistan had already secured a $10.5 million payment for the 14 games it was initially scheduled to hold before the country was removed as co-host on security grounds.

The ICC’s move to remove Pakistan - leaving India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as co-hosts - came after last year’s terrorist attack on Sri Lanka’s test team and security detail in which six policemen and a van driver were killed.

Pakistan had considered lobbying to have its game moved to another venue, such as the United Arab Emirates, but that the ICC ruled out.

Pakistan’s shocking defeat in first Test vs Sri Lanka

After outplaying Sri Lanka for the first three days, Pakistan cricket team was surprisingly all out on the fourth day when it lost their last eight batsmen for 46 runs, giving the visitors a dramatic 50-run victory in the first cricket Test at the Galle International Stadium.

Chasing a modest target of 168, Pakistan were collapsed from a seemingly impregnable 71-2 to 117 all out in their second innings before lunch on the fourth day.

Pakistan’s astonishing defeat gave Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series, the first between the two nations since gunmen attacked the Sri Lankan team bus in the Pakistani city of Lahore on March 3.

A stunned Pakistan captain Younis Khan said the team's lack of Test cricket -- just three Tests in the last 18 months -- had proved costly.

The team who a few days ago emerged as the champions of the World Twenty20 Cup could not achieve an easy target despite dominating the game for three successive days.

What do you think were the factors behind this defeat?

CRISTIANO RONALDO SOLD TO REAL MADRID

MANCHESTER (England) – MANCHESTER United have agreed to sell Cristiano Ronaldo to imageReal Madrid for a world record 80 million pounds, the club said on Thursday. ‘Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of 80 million pounds for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid,’ said a statement on its website, under the headline ‘Reds accept 80m Ronaldo bid.’

The statement continued: ‘At Cristiano’s request – who has again expressed his desire to leave – and after discussion with the player’s representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player. Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice.’

Ronaldo has long been a target for the Spanish giants, whose returning president Florentino Perez vowed earlier this week to do ‘everything possible’ to take the 24-year-old to the Bernabeu.

The news comes just days after Real clinched the 56 million pounds transfer of Brazilian playmaker Kaka from Italian side AC Milan as they look to compete with arch-rivals Barcelona on the domestic front and such as Manchester United and Chelsea in the Champions League.

United fans have repeatedly been told no deal had been agreed for the sale of FIFA’s world player of the year in the face of regular statements from Spain the former Sporting Lisbon star was bound for the Bernabeu.

Zardari throws out Quaid-e-Azam from the Presidency

I was alerted of this development earlier in the afternoon courtesy of blogger Farhan where he wrote a blog post The Terrible Blunder at Presidency. Caught up in work, I made a mental note to check it out in detail, but at 9pm Geo reportedly carried a news item along the same lines showing picture after picture where the Presidency had apparently removed all pictures of Quaid-e-Azam

Pakistan Cricket team at the Presidency without the Quaid-e-Azam portrait

Having a close look at the picture you see four portraits namely Asif Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and followed by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, nowhere do we see the portraits of the Founder of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohd Ali Jinnah or for that matter Allama Iqbal.

I hope this is just an accidental mistake and there is no attempt by the idiot President to alter our history in anyway whatsoever.

Michael Jackson’s life cut shockingly short

‘King of Pop’ had been spending many hours preparing for comeback tour

Gareth Cattermole / Getty Images file
Michael Jackson had been planning to start a series of comeback concerts in London and had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months. Promoters of the shows said in March that he had passed a lengthy physical examination.

LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson, defined in equal parts as the world’s greatest entertainer and perhaps its most enigmatic figure, was about to attempt one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Then his life was cut shockingly — and so far, mysteriously — short.

The 50-year-old musical superstar died Thursday, just as he was preparing for what would be a series of 50 concerts starting July 13 at London’s famed 02 arena. Jackson had been spending hours and hours toiling with a team of dancers for a performance he and his fans hoped would restore his tarnished legacy to its proper place in pop.

An autopsy was planned for Friday, though results were not likely to be final until toxicology tests could be completed, a process that could take several days and sometimes weeks. However, if a cause can be determined by the autopsy, they will announce the results, said Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in the posh Los Angeles neighborhood of Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital where doctors continued to work on him.

“It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known,” his brother Jermaine said.

Cardiac arrest is an abnormal heart rhythm that stops the heart from pumping blood to the body. It can occur after a heart attack or be caused by other heart problems.

Jackson’s death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music’s premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album “Thriller” — which included the blockbuster hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” — is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

As word of his death spread, MTV switched its programming to play videos from Jackson’s heyday. Radio stations began playing marathons of his hits. Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital. In New York’s Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

PAKISTAN VS SRILANKA ...T20 WORLD CUP FINAL

Pakistan lift World T20 Cup, beat Sri Lanka by 8 wkts

LONDON: Pakistan won their first major title in 17 years when they stunned Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the World Twenty20 final at a sell-out Lord's here on Sunday.

Seamer Abdur Razzaq claimed three wickets as Pakistan bowled and fielded aggressively to restrict Sri Lanka to 138-6, then coasted home easily with eight deliveries to spare.

Shahid Afridi hit an unbeaten 54 off 40 balls, his second consecutive half-century, and former captain Shoaib Malik made 24 not out during a match-winning partnership of 76 for the undefeated third wicket.

Pakistan, runners-up to India in the final of the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa two years ago, ended Sri Lanka's unbeaten run in the tournament with style.

Pakistan last won an offical multi-nation tournament in 1992 when Imran Khan's team lifted the World Cup by beating England in the final at the Melbourne cricket ground in Australia.

The win by Younus Khan's team gave Pakistanis back home reason to cheer as the cricket-mad nation has been deprived of international tours due to security concerns in the volatile nation.

The International Cricket Council has already ruled out holding World Cup matches in Pakistan in 2011 following the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore on March 3.

Pakistani openers Kamran Akmal and Shahzaib Hasan ensured there were no early scares as they put on 48 for the first wicket in seven overs.

Sanath Jayasuriya broke through with his first delivery in the next over when he beat Akmal in the air with his left-arm spin and had him stumped for 37 off 28 balls.

Jayasuriya then took a catch to get rid of Shahzaib off Muttiah Muralitharan for 19, but Afridi and Malik took Pakistan home amid loud celebrations from their fans in the stands.

Sri Lanka were dealt quick blows after Sangakkara won the toss and elected to take first strike on a slow wicket.

The Lankans slumped to 2-2 in the first nine balls and that became 34-4 before Sangakkara himself led the rescue act with a defiant unbeaten 64 from 52 balls.

Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews put on 68 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket as Sri Lanka plundered 59 runs in the final five overs.

Mathews returned unbeaten on 35 off 24 balls.

Pakistan got off to a sensational start when teenage fast bowler Mohammad Aamir sent back the in-form Tillekaratne Dilshan with the fifth ball of the match.

Dilshan, the tournament's leading scorer with 317 runs, miscued a pull shot off the speedy left-armer and was caught at backward square-leg by Shahzaib Hasan for zero.

Four balls later, Shahzaib grabbed his second catch at mid-off as Jehan Mubarak skied a leading edge off Razzaq, who shared the new ball with Aamir.

Jayasuriya counter-attacked with a six and four in Razzaq's second over, but the bowler hit back two balls later as the left-handed veteran edged a ball on to his stumps after making 17.

Razzaq, who replaced the injured Yasir Arafat after ending his links with the rebel Indian Cricket League, struck again in his third over when Misbah-ul Haq dived to his right at slip to remove Mahela Jayawardene for one.

Two restored Bin Qasim plants tripped again
Updated at: 0636 PST, Thursday, June 18, 2009
Two restored Bin Qasim plants tripped again KARACHI: The two restored power plants of Bin Qasim thermal station have tripped once again leaving the metropolis under darkness twice in two days.

It is pertinent to mention here that the power supply being received from Jamshoro KDA was tripped at 7pm on Wednesday, resulting in cutting down power supply from all electric generation plants of Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) including Cannop and IPPs’ power generation plants.

Following the major power failure, emergency efforts were taken by KESC officials, fixing two power plants of Bin Qasim thermal stations soon which made possible provision of electric supply to some localities here but those two restored plants have reportedly been went out of order once again.

Some localities including Lyari and Landhi had been facing load shedding for last nine hours, sources said.

Pumping stations were unable to supply water to the areas for want of electricity resulting in the acute water shortage in the concerned localities across metropolis.

Students preparing for Inter Arts papers have also been suffered due to the power crisis meanwhile, the generators and UPS, the alternative power suppliers, were also broken down due to hours-long load shedding and scores of patients being treated in JPMC and Civil hospitals are facing the music.

Most of the sections of Civil Hospitals had worn darkness including ICU and Operation Theaters.

While in meantime, people staged protest in various areas of Hyderabad as HESCO has also met the same fate as did KESC.

Pakistan will rule the cricket world?

Pakistan will rule the cricket world?
LONDON: Pakistan have succeeded in reaching the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 Cup 2009 as they won two of the three games in the Super Eights stage. After losing to Sri Lanka, they defeated New Zealand and Ireland to book their place in the semi-finals.

Pakistan captain Younus Khan believes that Pakistan will be crowned World Twenty20 champions. He says that they now have the right mixture of experience and youth to see them through.

Pakistan were runners-up to their bitter rivals India at the 2007 World Twenty20 tournament. This time, cricket lovers cannot see them contest again for the title as Indians have been knocked out of the tournament after being defeated by the West Indies and England in their Super Eights matches.

What do you think? Will Pakistan be the new champions of Twenty20 cricket?

Obama seeks new beginning between US, Muslims

Obama seeks new beginning between US, Muslims
Quoting from the Holy Qura’an for emphasis, President Barack Obama called for a “new beginning between the United States and Muslims” recently and said together, they could confront violent extremism across the globe and advance the timeless search for peace in the Middle East.

“This cycle of suspicion and discord must end,” Obama said in a widely anticipated speech in one of the world’s largest Muslim countries, an address designed to reframe relations after the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001, and the US-led war in Iraq.

Obama said his country does not want to keep its troops in Afghanistan. “Make no mistake: we do not want to keep our troops in Afghanistan. We seek no military bases there,” he said.

“We would gladly bring every single one of our troops home if we could be confident that there were not violent extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan determined to kill as many Americans as they possibly can. But that is not yet the case.”

Obama, however, said his country’s commitment to fulfill its role, as part of a 46-country coalition will “will not weaken” despite the costs involved. “It is costly and politically difficult to continue this conflict,” he said.

“We also know that military power alone is not going to solve the problems in Afghanistan and Pakistan.” He added the US plans to invest 1.5 billion dollars each year over the next five years in construction and aid money to the displaced in Pakistan, and 2.8 billion dollars to help Afghans develop their economy.

In a gesture to the Islamic world, Obama conceded at the beginning of his remarks that tension “has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations.”

“And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear,” said the president, who recalled hearing prayer calls of ‘Azaan’ at dawn and dusk while living in Indonesia as a boy. At the same time, he said the same principle must apply in reverse. “Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire.”

Obama said the actions of violent extremist Muslims are “irreconcilable with the rights of human beings”, and quoted the Qura’an to make his point: “be conscious of God and always speak the truth.” “Islam is not part of the problem in combating violent extremism, it is an important part of promoting peace,” he said. “Hamas must put an end to violence, recognise past agreements, and recognise Israel’s right to exist,” he said of the organisation the United States deems as terrorist.

“The Palestinian Authority must develop its capacity to govern, with institutions that serve the needs of its people,” Obama said. “At the same time, Israelis must acknowledge that just as Israel’s right to exist cannot be denied, neither can Palestine. The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements” on the West Bank and outskirts of Jerusalem, he said. “It is time for these settlements to stop.”

As for Jerusalem itself, he said it should be a “secure and lasting home for Jews and Christians and Muslims ...” Obama also said the Arab nations should no longer use the conflict with Israel to distract their own people from other problems.

Obama said he has a commitment to governments “that reflect the will of the people”. And yet, he said, “No system of government can or should be imposed upon one nation by any other.” At times, there was an echo of Obama’s campaign mantra of change in his remarks, and he said many are afraid it cannot occur. “There is so much fear, so much mistrust. But if we choose to be bound by the past, we will never move forward,” he said.

Will Obama speech satisfy Muslim world?

Why this bloodshed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine, if U. S. not against the humanity?

Isn’t U.S. pursuing double-standard policy?

Let us know your comments.

BENEFITS OF RECITING QURAN -E-PAK (THE HOLY BOOK OF ALLAH)

ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam

1 - Reading and reflecting over the Qur'aan fulfills an Islamic duty
So by reading and reflecting over the Qur'an, one fulfills an obligation and is rewarded for that. Upon fulfilling this obligation, the Qur'an then becomes a proof for him on the Day of Judgement!

2- The Qur'aan will be a proof for us on the Day of Judgement
So one of two things will occur with this proof, the Book of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. It will either be in your favor, a proof for you on the Day when you will need every single good deed, or it will be something standing against you, the very Speech of your Creator, a proof against you! Who could be saved from the terrors of that Day if Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala's own Speech is against him?!?!

3 - The Qur'aan will intercede for us on the Day of Judgement
The beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said: "Read the Qur'an, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions."

4 - Your status in this life will be raised
Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam has said: "Verily Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala raises some people by way of this Book and lowers others by it." [6]

5 - You will be from the best of the people
Hazrat Usman Radi Allahu anhu said: "The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur'aan and teach it to others"

6 - There are ten rewards for each letter you recite from the Qur'an
So increase your recitation of the Qur'an to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well...

7 - The recitors of the Qur'an will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels
Hazrat Aa'ishah Radi Allahu anha relates that the Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said: "Verily the one who recites the Qur'an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward."

8 -The Qur'an will lead you to Paradise
The Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said:
"The Qur'an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; Whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire."

9 - Your position in Paradise is determined by the amount of Qur'an you memorize in this life
The Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam said:

"It will be said to the companion of the Qur'an: Read and elevate (up through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!"

May we read the Quran without fail and with the right intention ameen.
